A Visit to the Embassy of the Free Mind

Last week I visted the Embassy of the Free Mind. Hidden inside a historic canal house in Amsterdam, this is not a museum in the traditional sense. It feels more like stepping into a world of old ideas, symbols and forgotten ways of looking at life.

I came for the Hermetic texts, alchemical drawings and rare books, but what stayed with me most was the feeling of the place.

There were diagrams connecting the human body to the cosmos, symbolic drawings of trees and planets, old manuscripts filled with mystery, and books that seemed to hold an entirely different way of thinking. Not everything was meant to be understood immediately, and I liked that. Some things invite contemplation rather than explanation.

I was especially drawn to the image of Sophia, a symbol of wisdom, and to the beautiful alchemical illustrations, where science, philosophy and spirituality once seemed to belong together.

What makes this place so special is not only the collection, but the atmosphere. The dark library rooms, the sunlight on old paper, the quiet ( gorgeous!) garden, the sense that every room holds another layer to discover.

I also loved speaking with the guides, who brought many of the symbols and stories to life.

In a time when everything moves fast and so much is reduced to information, there is something refreshing about a place devoted to deeper thought, imagination and wonder. The Embassy of the Free Mind reminded me that knowledge was once not only about facts, but also about meaning. And perhaps that is what drew me in most.

If you are in Amsterdam and feel drawn to symbolism, hidden histories, philosophy or simply beautiful places with soul, it is well worth a visit.

With Love, Sofie
